On 9 June 2017 the World Health Organization designated venomous snakebites as a Category-A Neglected Tropical Disease. Poisonous snakebites are on the rise due to human encroachment into natural and rural areas. Current estimates exceed 5.5 million envenomations per year globally resulting in >138,000 deaths and >450,000 permanent disabilities, including chronic neuromuscular disorders, amputation of limbs and disfigurements.
